Design of the Workshop
As a psychodynamic therapist, I am aware of the
complexity of human mind. So, I do not believe in miracle solutions
or quick fixes. As a medical doctor, I want solutions to problems
like stress, to be specific, tangible and clearly beneficial. With
this challenge in mind, I approached the design of this workshop.
This workshop was designed after researching the subject extensively.
I also bring my years of experience with patients from different
cultures. Referral of people with stress by colleagues (cardiologists,
internists, gastroentrologists, neurologists and other physicians)
has been a valuable source of understanding the subject. In fact,
it was a cardiologist friend of mine who some years ago suggested
that I should provide stress management services. He had realized
that half of his patients, who came for consultation, did not have
heart diseases, but their symptoms could only be explained by mental
stress. Similarly, every day headaches, which are extremely common,
are called, “tension headaches” in medical terminology
because they are caused by tension (stress).
The focus of the workshop is on the individual
participant. People around them in their professional and personal
lives will benefit secondarily. For e.g. a manager will not only
educate his colleague about stress but also identify symptoms of
it in them. Besides, by being more efficient at managing stress
they will be easier to work and live with.
This workshop does not focus on those structures
and dynamics of organizations, which can create a stressful environment.
It is hoped that organizations will address those issues as well.
