What Causes Stress?
“Man is not disturbed by the events,
but by the view he takes of them”
(Epictetus)
Stress is caused by how you perceive and react to external events.
We all react to stress in our own way. An event that makes one person
anxious can be completely shrugged off by another. How we cope with
stress essentially is determined by our “PERSONALITY”.
“Stressful circumstances alone do not cause emotional suffering
and physical illness. It is how you perceive them and how you react
in these circumstances is what determines your emotional well being
and your ability to live peacefully”.
Dr. Aftab Khan
A person can have acute stress because of a major life
event like death of a spouse or loved one, divorce, loss of job,
major illness in the family. However, Stress is also caused by less
dramatic but constant irritations like cost of living, too much
work, too little work, misplacing or breaking things, irritating
noises, traffic, everyday relationships, and minor troubles at work.
The cumulative stress of everyday concerns, which researches refer
to as “chronic stress” can have an even greater
impact on our health as stress produced by major life changes.
It is also known that sometimes changes, which are desirable and
for the better also cause stress for e.g. Marriage, having a baby,
getting a promotion, or moving to a new more desirable location
etc.
