Psychological Problems
Under this heading, I will include a wide range
of problems that many people face and which do not have the characteristics
of any diagnosable psychiatric disorder. Relationship problems like
the ones between husband and wife are quite common.
One very important fact to remember is that, in no situation, the
role of a psychiatrist is to be a judge; be it relationship problems
or otherwise. The sole focus is on understanding the problems -
which is then used therapeutically.
There are a lot of other issues that people bring in to the psychiatrists
clinic, for e.g. dissatisfaction in life or at work, poor self confidence,
low self esteem etc. Working at Harvard University, Mental Health
Clinic I noticed that a great number of graduate and under graduate
students came for consultation for these issues. Clinic record suggested
that 33 percent of all Harvard students utilized this service at
least once or more.
